News Bits

Christian cites separation of church and state as his argument against anti-Christian art displayed in public library. Now they’re starting to get it! (Or maybe not: he deliberately and repeatedly misquotes the first amendment as saying that hostility toward religion is not allowed, when the Bill of Rights actually says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”)

Some advice to atheists: Don’t be a dick. PZ Myers responds.

Tea Party signs you won’t see on TV.

Good BloggingHeads discussion between two leaders in the fields of moral psychology and experimental ethics.

Alvin Plantinga retirement conference videos.

God I laughed hard at this. And this. And this.

How much damage Netanyahu and the religious settlers have caused to this country.

Good advice to atheists: Don’t be a dick. More worth the read than you think.

If you’re going to link accomodationist, self-hating-atheist dick Josh Rosenau, I’m going to link two alternate views:

Where’s the Backlash?
by Jason Rosenhouse

Backlash? Harming the cause? Where?
by PZ Myers

And if Rosenau isn’t a dick, why is he using words like “twatting”?

This news bit from NPR about the Toyota brake problems is interesting. Especially the final comments about the certainty of belief in spite of the evidence to the contrary.

So, the Toyota problem was the same as the Audi one from eons ago?

To the extent that he means state-sponsored hostility to religion is barred, he is correct. “Respecting” here means “pertaining to”, not “having admiration for”. It is forbidden under the 1st Amendment for the federal government (and, following the Civil War, forbidden for states and cities under the 14th Amendment) to actively disparage sectarian religion.

For example, a group of Irish Catholics cannot take over the Boston city council and issue a bunch of “Protestants are heretics who will burn in Hell” declarations.

Luke, is you suffer from any prejudice towards the Jewish people or Israel, I suggest you confront it.
Because if you tend to drip slowly poison against Israel or Jews in general suggesting wider things & conclusions, it would be very inappropriate.
I would like to have a decent conversation about these issue since it is important to me as a liberal in Israel and an atheist.

I do not perceive any shortage of other sites which welcome discussion of political issues such as Israeli-Palestinian relations. Why clog up a blog dedicated primarily to the philosophy of religion with such matters?

If you’re going to link accomodationist…

And the South Park atheist wars continue. Let me just say something: I’ve had some success with my uncle, a YEC, by taking the position of theistic evolutionist (i.e., an accomodationist). If instead I had called him an idiot, he probably would have withdrawn even more into his YEC shell.

For what it’s worth…

Don’t look at me. Why did Luke post it in the first place, does it have to do with philosophy of religion? Maybe & probably in detail.
Some people think that because they are liberals they should be very anti-Israeli. It’s like a soccer game, whatever one teams favors – you should not.
What would Desirism have to say on the issue? How is the conflict connected to religion?

G’Disraeli,

I have no problems with Jews as a race. I have a problem with any country that carries out massive acts of state terror for over 20 years. Naturally, I oppose the violent acts of the Palestinians as well, but they have been lesser because they have less money. Race and prejudice has nothing to do with it.

Luke,

Maybe you have problems with Jews as a people? that would be very stereotypical(Martha Nussbuam is a Jew by the way).
Jews are not a race, Hitler named Jews a “race”.
Is this a prejudgment of Jews?

Why only “Naturally”? Why not actively? Is blowing up a bus or restaurant full of Jewish kids not enough for you? Is deliberately trying to kill the most Jews seem fine to you?
Maybe praising the holocaust is or sending children to blow up. Palestinians get a portrait of an ultimate victim, which is not the case.

And how do you define violent acts of terror and how far to you take it to?
I’m the first one to critique my government & society, it is not antisemitism. Yes they are war crimes, misjudgments and mistreatment. Israel is an imperfect democracy and is stuck be tween a rock & a hard place. As essentially a democracy surrounded with essentially religious & Arab tyrants. There is no other military force in the history of warfare which toke actions that the Israeli army did not to harm civilians.
Mistakes happen in war all the time, including friendly fire. War crimes happen too. Yet Israel is not the Hamas.

-But what do you demand of Jews in Israel in particular you do not demand of other people?
I’m against the Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria and I’m in favor of a two state solution.
And I’m against Israeli mistreatment of others when at appears, but within proportion and I do not deal with “race”.

G’DIsraeli,

What are you talking about…

Fine, not really a race, either. An ‘ethnoreligious’ group, to be precise. Are you insinuating that I think it’s okay to blow up busses of Jewish kids, or that I praise the holocaust? I condemned acts of state terror perpetrated by the Israeli government. I did not praise acts of terror against Israel or Jews.

I’m the first one to critique my government & society, it is not antisemitism. Yes they are war crimes, misjudgments and mistreatment. I’m against the Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria and I’m in favor of a two state solution.

Exactly. We are in total agreement. I demand precisely the same thing of Israel as I do of every other nation. The worst offender in the world is my own country, so please don’t tell me this is about some hatred I have of Jews. Geez…

G'DIsraeli July 19, 2010 at 10:20 am

If so, we don’t differ much in our political solutions.

“I did not praise acts of terror against Israel or Jews.” – My point exactly. Why do you not -condemn- Palestinian terror acts? There own population suffers from it. Street executions, religious law. This month 450 children under age ten were married in a mass wedding under the Hamas rule. -You think for some reason that it’s all up to Israel and find no need to condemn the Palestinians?
Chomsky treats there organizations as Hizbullah or Hamas as “political social groups” and not as radical fascist Islamic religious movements.

-If they had a state would warfare stop?
Did you ever take time to read the Hamas charter, watch there television or school education?
Jews eat babies. Jews invented the Holocaust. Jews are monkeys and donkeys, it says so in the holy book. You should kill & eat the Jews says Micky mouse.

This is what lead to the infamous Ramallah lynch which shocked the Israeli public (like never before) = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1kglhluz1U.
People actually holding internal organs of Jews because they are Jews.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Ramallah_lynching

-And you find no erg to condemn this, only to “not praise” it. This is why I asked you what I did.

G’DIsraeli,

I think we’re talking past each other. I do condemn Palestinian terror acts, and even did so explicitly in this very thread.
