Mr. Freeman was far more realistic as the President of the United States, a preview of Obama, an existent being versus God, a non-existent being.

Now to get shots of Obama holding an automatic pistol and racing a sports car. The SS will probably let him have the cotton candy.

This post is incredibly racist.

I suppose this isn’t objectification of Morgan Freedman? Surely you’re taking those pictures of him, which were obviously intended for one thing, into anti-Theism pictures without his consent?

It is, in several ways, objectification of Morgan Freeman, and another example of why objectification is not inherently wrong. :)

I’m very offended by this post, and…

Oh forget it. I can’t keep up the joke.

I don’t even know what “offended” feels like. That means you are actually bothered by something someone else said about you, right?

Chris July 22, 2010 at 3:04 pm

No, Martin, you sexist turd, “offended” means that somebody ELSE thinks that you meant and said something that you didn’t mean or say about somebody else, and their offense at what they think about what you didn’t say means that you should apologize.

Luke, you’re going down a slippery slope with this one. You’re contributing to the culture of violence and/or hatred against believers. What’s more, you’re actually HURTING believers right as we speak. They’re not in physical pain, but if a believer happens to stumble upon this (which is highly probable), he/she will suffer chronic FEAR of being in public because he/she might be harassed by unbelievers.

I concur with Silas. Luke isn’t taking into account that he (probably) has readers in Pakistan, a country where Christians are an oppressed minority and are under constant threat of violence.

Every time he mocks the dearly held beliefs of Christians, he demeans Christians and contributes to the culture of dehumanization and violence against Christians in those countries where they are a minority.

People in such countries actually use “Christianity is ridiculous and false” as an excuse to treat Christians in such a matter, and this post simply adds fuel to the fire by contributing to that idea.

And Luke, don’t even try the “I’m mocking all Gods” excuse.

We all know what mean

Why are so many people belittling those who feel differently than you do? The post offended some people’s sense of ethics/morals/fairness or whatever you want to call it. So we had a debate (which is a good thing by the way). And surprise, it’s the internet and some people said other offensive things. Whatever. Is all this belittling what makes this community different that the the “emotional losers” over at Pharyngula? A little self awareness please.

Terry, I am very offended by your comment that us belittlers are offensive, and further you comparing us with the losers at Pharyngula I find, quite frankly, sexist and racist.

Terry,

…some people?!
…a debate…really?

What that was – was a torrential downpour of shit.
Any finding or understanding gained in that event, is so severely tainted that it almost certainly demands heavy reevaluation.

Emotions aren’t the problem – it’s the abysmal bullshit to argument ratio.

A little self awareness please.

Yeah that’s right, “some people” had a debate, and “some people” said offensive things, and “some people” got emotional, and “some people” made snap judgments. I’m personally guilty to varying degrees of all those things, and probably some others things I haven’t thought of yet.

And by the way, “abysmal bullshit” and “argument” are not mutually exclusive as you seem to imply. Some arguments are bullshit, obviously. But I’m sure you knew that. You probably just got a little emotional when you posted that, and accidentally spewed some “abysmal bullshit”. Happens to the best of us, don’t think twice about it.

Don’t forget Deuteronomy 23:1 – if you’re testicles have been injured, you are not welcome at church. I know its not part of the official list with the numbers and such, but I choose to believe that this is a key moral principle that should never been done away with. This, and the whole kill your wimmin fokes if they have the audacity to dishonor you, or make you feel inadequate, or make you “disfunctional” if you know what I mean (wink), or… Bejeebus, those wimmin fokes have a crap-load of power over me, wtf?!?!?

Much irony in this statement.

You yourself are also belittling those who feel differently than you. Quite frankly, I found a -large- majority of the comments (though not all, there were some kind/constructive ones) using Luke as target practice in a mob-mentality-like fashion. What about -our- sense of morality/fairness/ethics? Do you deny our right to feel disgusted/indignant?

Terry,

Really?

That’s your point against me – that I used the word ‘argument’ incorrectly? How about if use the words ‘signal’ and ‘noise’ Strunk? Would that be fine with you?

*Sigh* Is all that passive aggressiveness really needed?

You used the word ‘some’ to muddy the truth and you know it. Frankly, it was the vast majority but because the garbage was coming from your side you changed the wording to suit your viewing of event. And purposefully distorting the truth to suit your own needs does kind of piss me off. (Btw, I also found the original post also in bad taste)

I also think that there is a significant difference between a civil well reasoned debate and the cluster fuck that occurred…don’t you?

Is that how we’d want to make our attempts at finding truth?

V,

I pointed out an incorrect assumption in your statement about the “spewing bullshit”/arguing ratio. I wasn’t just nitpicking your use of the term argument. I thought the point was meaningful, obviously you don’t.

I used the word “some” because that’s my honest impression of the debate. So, it seems we disagree about the nature of the debate. Is there room for honest difference of opinion in your world-view? Or does that automatically mean that I’m, as you said, “purposefully distorting the truth to suit your own needs”?

Terry,

So you saw all of that: all that vitriol, the bullying of luke, the emotional manipulation that was self-evident to anyone who bothered to read even a small fraction of the comments including lukes. That’s part of reasonable debate?

Would you run a scientific journal like that?
If that happened off the net would you think that was ok?
Would you trust any insight gained from such a process?
Do you think that’s how this blog should operate?

Anyways, that’s all I have to say. It’s Friday, time to get drunk.

  (Quote)

Terry July 23, 2010 at 4:56 pm

V,

No, I wouldn’t run a scientific journal like that, or anything else for that matter. Not if I had a choice. And I don’t think the vitriol, bullying, etc was OK. I just don’t think the vast majority of the debate was that way – at least not the stuff on this blog. Although I concede that a significant portion of it was.

But I agree, I don’t feel like arguing this point anymore.

Incredible. It’s kind of lame that I see so many people trying to prove that God doesn’t exist, yet they fail so utterly that many don’t even notice that they capitalize his name. If he doesn’t exist, then why would you personify him and capitalize his name? Surely if you didn’t really believe, you’d say the name in lower case…or is there something deep inside you that wants to believe he exists and you are just agnostic instead of atheistic? I believe this to be the case rather than a total non-belief.
