A Song About Quine

by Luke Muehlhauser on September 6, 2010 in Funny,Video

He’ll play upon
Your naturalistic intuitions
He’ll lure you in
With the promise of positions that you love
Like realism about numbers and sets
And the view that philosophy’s continuous with science.

And then you’re caught in the web
No support from the a priori
All aboard Neurath’s ship
It will all be fine
But you’re tied to the mast
It’s all a posteriori
Here on in; have a blast
With Willard Van Orman Quine.

He looks so good
Next to Carnap, Ayer and Chisholm
And there’s nothing wrong
With confirmational holism;
It’s quite nice as an account of how theories face the tribunal of
Mmm yeah.

But step away when he starts
Talking about the analytic.
Meaning’s not that strange in being tricky to define.
And it comes in small bits;
Not all holism’s terrific.
Keep your head; keep your wits
Round Willard Van Orman Quine.

Love this song. She (Carrie Jenkins) does excellent work in my AOS as well.

Here a painful song…

Maybe Shria isn’t so bad after all? I think its the horticulturalists who are worst.

It’s interesting that some philosophers love Quine for launching the naturalistic approach to philosophy, and others hate him for taking down logical empiricism. :)

She’s my old tutor :)

I’ve been admiring this song since I first heard / saw it posted at the U. Mass website last fall. A fitting tribute to Willard Van Orman Quine (http://www.wvquine.org). I also love the caption at the top which matches my philosophy:

Common Sense Atheism: “When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.” – Stephen Roberts

What’s the chance of getting the sexy philosophers list update? I kinda like the geeky ones…
