God Hates Your Christmas Tree?

by Luke Muehlhauser on December 22, 2008 in Bible,General Atheism

Behold the wrath of God against Christmas trees.

Behold the wrath of God against Christmas trees.

In Jeremiah chapter 10, God says:

Do not start following pagan religious practices… For the religion of these people is worthless. They cut down a tree in the forest, and a craftsman makes it into an idol with his tools. He decorates it with overlays of silver and gold. He uses hammer and nails to fasten it together so that it will not fall over …the people of those nations are both stupid and foolish.

The Biblical God hates tree-decorating because it is an ancient pagan practice.

Well, not quite.

As Richard Bucher points out, the rest of the chapter and our knowledge of ancient pagan practices make it clear that God does not oppose harmless tree-decorating, but instead opposes carving the whole tree into an idol of another god.

So, dear reader, fear not the wrath of God while enjoying your decorated tree this Christmas. And if an atheist gives you crap about God being against Christmas trees, gently point to the next few verses in that chapter and to the other ancient accounts of carving whole trees into an idol, and explain that God does not, in fact, hate Christmas trees.

But he does hate gays. And feasts. And plowing with an ox and a donkey together. And menstruation. And working on Saturdays. And unbelievers. And mixed fabrics. Evil! Evil! Evil!

you, like alot of people, like to play word games with God’s word. ask yourself this question, if Jesus were here on christmas, do you think that he would cut down a tree for christmas, or for that matter, have any kind of pagan idol? think not. i also do not think that any true christian would put up a christmas tree if Jesus were here. would you say to Jesus,” would you please help me decorate this tree like the pagan’s do for their god’s”? GOD SAID, LEARN NOT THE WAYS OF THE PAGANS! GOD DID NOT SAY THAT HE LIKED THE WAY THEY WORSHIPED THEIR GODS AND TO USE THEIR WAYS. WORD GAMES DOES NOT PLEASE OUR GOD. NOT EVEN THE CROSSING OF THE LETTER T NOR THE DOTTING OF A I WILL HAPPEN TO GOD’S WORD. WHAT EVER GOD SAYS, STANDS FAST FOR EVER AND EVER, AND YOUR WORD GAMES WILL NOT CHANGE GOD’S WORD. JUST DO THE THINGS THAT PLEASES GOD, NOT JUST THINGS TO PLEASE YOURSELF!! AND THAT IS WHAT CHRISTMAS IS ALL ABOUT, PLEASING ONE’S SELF. GOD NEVER SAID TO CELEBRATE JESUS BIRTHDAY, FOR THAT MATTER, THE BIBLE DOES NOT GIVE A DATE THAT JESUS WAS BORN. GOD KEPT JUSUS DIRTH DATE A SECRET.

Exactly…! I appreciate others who go lil further to understand the scripture. I actually don’t cut down any tree, nor do I decorate…to much…:) But I so love my pre-lit tree….and enjoy putting it up every Christmas season along w/ the songs about my LORD JESUS CHRIST…! I will continue to celebrate Christmas!

BTW, I am not atheist…:)) But I do celebrate Christmas. I will celebrate my LORD’S Birth…just as those did in the Bible. Jesus Chrsit is the best thing that ever happen to me. I love Him dearly. I will not holler at you or call you any names…that isn’t of God. What I will do is pray for you. I read your story, and I thought, he changed Paul…how hard would it be to change your heart back to your first love.

Sorry to tell ya, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. You sounded solid in the first couple of sentences, but because you don’t know God or the Bible, you start floundering. And then you really sounded uneducated. No disrespect intended. It’s just if a person wants to make a point, they should do it intelligently. Research thoroughly, and get it right.

I thought it was a good article. It’s sort of weird how close Christmas tree decorating was to the description in the Bible, though.
