Speaking in Fort Collins, CO

by Luke Muehlhauser on October 26, 2010 in News

Redated post from Oct. 12th.

On Wednesday, October 27th at 4pm I will be giving a talk at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. The title of my talk is…

The Science of Morality: No Gods Required

That means tomorrow! :)

The event is hosted by Leaders in Free Thought, a student group affiliated with Center for Inquiry and the Secular Student Alliance.

The talk will last 30-35 minutes, followed by lots of time for questions and answers, just in case the talk alone does not resolve all questions of moral philosophy once and for all. :)

Parking and Directions: The speech will be held in the West Ballroom in the Lory Student Center (map) on the CSU campus (map). The easiest way to get there is to turn onto Laurel St. from College Ave. and take a left on Meldrum. This will take you right into the parking in front of the student center. Guests should park on the west end of the parking lot, in the Pay-For-Park area. It is $1/hr, but parking is free after 4pm, so when arriving shortly before 4pm you only have to pay $1 for the rest of the day.

If you enter the student center from the parking lot, walk down the corridor to the south end, and then up the stairs to the second level. There will be signs on every entrance directing people where to go.

If you have questions about how to reach this location, please contact colostate@secularstudents.org.

Any chance you could get someone to record it?

Heads Up October 12, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Are you going to use Prezi for your presentation?

lukeprog October 12, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Not sure.

lukeprog October 12, 2010 at 3:47 pm

Heads Up,

As a matter of fact, yes. :)

Kip October 12, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Not recording this would be a great injustice to mankind. ;-)

So… when are you going to come speak to FoFDallas? :-)

lukeprog October 12, 2010 at 8:09 pm

When somebody pays for my flight out there.

Andrew October 13, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Hope it’s a blast and you turn some heads, if not wake up some minds.

If the talk goes unrecorded, will you be posting a transcription, or your notes, or something for those of us lost in the interwebbing?

lukeprog October 13, 2010 at 2:15 pm

I’ll post something, yeah.

Sly October 17, 2010 at 11:50 pm

Post the prezi afterwards please!

Me loving the design of that poster. Real good talent there.

It’ll be cool to see you debate live again. I’m interested to see how (if) you’ve changed since last time

lukeprog October 21, 2010 at 2:34 pm

al friedlander,

Who? Me? It’s not a debate, just a talk with Q&A.

al friedlander October 22, 2010 at 1:57 pm

oops, my bad. The Q@A was what I was referring to.

Luke, If you are not already committed, how about dinner and drinks afterwards, on me;-) There will just be 4 0r 5 of us, a mixed group of believers and atheists.

Sounds fun. There may be others who want to come along, too. Let’s do it. Talk to me afterward.

demiurge October 24, 2010 at 10:02 am

Great, looking forward to meeting you. Have you done any promotion of the event locally? There is an atheist group in Boulder (an hour drive) that would probably be interested in attending. Not too mention others at CU Boulder and the Denver area. I will try and get the word out today with some emails.

lukeprog October 24, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Thanks, demiurge. The ‘Leaders in Free Thought’ group at CSU has been spreading the word, too. But I would greatly appreciate it if you would pass the word to some of the other groups in the area!

Tomorrow is the big day. Best of luck!

Cyril October 26, 2010 at 9:42 am

So… is there going to be recording or not? I realise this question has already been asked, but I was hoping that now that it’s happening tomorrow we could get a more definite response. Ideally this response would be a “yes”; if so, when should it be up?

Michael October 26, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Good luck for tomorrow, Luke. I really hope that it passes as a success. :)

mojo.rhythm October 26, 2010 at 4:34 pm

You going to get into the debate circuit any time soon Luke? Got to start preparing you for a showdown with Darth Craig (pardon the lame Star Wars reference ;).

lukeprog October 26, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Debates do attract a large crowd, but I don’t think I’ll have the skills to even begin debating for several more years.

Melissa October 27, 2010 at 6:50 am

I will be there :)

Justin October 27, 2010 at 7:09 pm

When you start, come to Grand Rapids, MI.

Kristopher Hite October 27, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Hi Luke,
Nice to meet you tonight and thanks for speaking at CSU. I’m interested to witness our mutual and evolving understanding of the “science of morality.”
I’m working on writing that “real world” thought experiment about the woman with the ex boyfriend in prison with Porphyria up in a post. If you want to know a little more about the work that lead up to this check it out here -> http://www.tompainesghost.com/2010/10/biochemistry-of-halloween-vampires.html

And here is video of parts of the talk we gave yesterday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5T5qjFNa5U

demiurge October 28, 2010 at 9:46 am

I enjoyed your talk yesterday and especially the conversation at dinner afterwards. You are a skilled public speaker and come across as very thoughtful and knowledgeable. The interjection of humor, and the sensitivity/empathy you show towards the views of others, makes quite an impression. I was also impressed with the video presentation, that was very well done, did you use a special software program?
We will definitely try to organize your return for another talk in Colorado; soon before your speaking fees go stratospheric ;-)
