Earlier today, my coworker sent an email to everyone at my workplace (all of whom are cool with my atheism), with the following subject line: “To everyone: TGIF!!!!! To Luke: T_IF!!!!!”    :)

Anybody wanna translate this William Lane Craig debate from German to English for everybody?

It’s a funny joke, but honestly do feel weird saying things like “oh my god” on atheist websites. Idiomatic or not, some of the commenters can get a bit militant.

Well, the rest of it might be interesting, but translating Craig’s opening speech is going to be pretty superfluous for anyone who has listened to a couple of his debates. I don’t speak a word of German, yet I was somehow magically able to know what the sentence “Gott ist die beste Erklärung für die Feinabstimmung des Universums für intelligentes Leben” meant instantly.

Though I wonder if he changed it up to be more culturally relevant.

“If God does not exist, a DJ cannot be hold morally responsible for playing dubstep even if the dancers want to rave to house music. He is merely behaving unfashionably.”

Luke, I believe you can watch that same Craig/Schmidt-Salomon debate here:

I tried to find anything in English on the Craig/Schmidt-Saloman debate, but with no success. Very impressive that Craig debates in another language. Such a pity that he has chosen to use his intellectual power to advocate for magic rather than knowledge.

The Utopia U is kind of like John Amos Comenius’ (1592-1670) “College of Light”. Read 9th paragraph down at this website:

Hi Luke,

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now but have only commented once before. I started reading it just after my de-conversion one year ago, and I’ve been enjoying your well thought out articles.

As for that debate in German, I managed to use Google translate to get a rough translation, it is very impressive that Craig can debate in another language. I’m sure he has a better command of the German language than most of his opponents had of English.

Craig 1:,%2Bmu%25CC%2588ssen%2Bwir%2Buns%2Bzwei%2Bweitere%2BFragen%2Bstellen:%2B1)%2BWelche%2Bguten%2BGru%25CC%2588nde%2Bgibt%2Bes%2Bfu%25CC%2588r%2Bdie%2BAnnahme,%2Bdass%2Bes%2Beinen%2BGott%2Bgibt%253F%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26prmd%3Div

Schmidt/Salomon 1:,%2Bvoneinander%2Blernen%2Bzu%2Bk%25C3%25B6nnen.%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26prmd%3Div

Craig 2:

Schmidt/Salomon 2:,%2Bman%2Bsolle%2Bsich%2Bsolange%2Bwiederholen,%2Bbis%2Bman%2Bverstanden%2Bwu%25CC%2588rde.%2BAngesichts%2Bder%2Bbeschr%25C3%25A4nkten%2BRedezeit%2Bvon%2B12%2BMinuten%2Bkann%2Bich%2Bdiesem%2BRat%2Bnicht%2Bfolgen%2Bund%2Bmuss%2Bmich%2Bauf%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26prmd%3Div

I think the fifth link, which I didn’t post, was from another debate.

The two round debate fits Craig’s style though. I find that the only times that his opponents are able to get the better of him are during cross examinations, as in his debates with Kagan and Bradley.

Thanks, Alex! Though, I’m still hoping somebody may be interested to do a more accurate translation some day.

Nice collection of news bits, Luke. I’m liking the religion comparing thingy quite a bit. And In regards to the irrelevance of pledges of allegiance- I’m a teacher and I don’t say ours, even in front of the kids.

Miraculous evidence of Paul Bunyan

A man finds a log with markings inside. He says it’s an image of Jesus, but look for yourself: you can clearly see that it is Paul Bunyan’s axe head. I mean, it’s inside a sawn log!

Schmidt-Salomon gegen Craig February 6, 2011 at 3:55 am

Hi, does there exists an audio file (e.g. *.mp3 format) for the debate between Schmidt-Salomon u. Craig? (I have seen it on Youtube, but I would like to be able to listen to this en route to university on my *.mp3 player.) I can’t seem to find anything so far on the net. But if anyone knows an archive or link, etc., please do let us know. Thanks in advance to the potential future person who would find something.
