You should think about doing a top 10 list of your favourite TED talks. Would be a good read!

Hmmmm… not a bad idea.

What’s in your genome?
by Larry Moran at Sandwalk

Percentages by category. The bottom line:
Known essential stuff: 8.5%
Known junk: 65%
Unknown: 24.5%

The next time some Creationist brings up junk DNA, make him give numbers.

That last link is confusing. They said that there was an 89% chance that Bin Laden was in one town, and a 95% chance that he was in a different town. I don’t know what information they thought they were conveying.

Ask a mathematician: How do I estimate the probability that God exists?

I read the comments following that, and it made me cry. People quoted Wiliam Dembski, William Lane Craig and Swinburne as though they were reliable sources on the mathematics of probability.

Sean Santos,

Actually, yes, Gary Drescher read the study more closely than I did and found out the reporting on it was bullshit, so I removed the twitter link. I’ve removed it from this post now, too.

This might clarify the confusion:

“This item has been corrected. The figure initially reported was incorrect; the model predicted a 88.9% probability given the distance. Also, the model only predicts the probability of his being within a geographic radius of his last known location, not a specific city. The article has been corrected to reflect this fact.”

Apropos of nothing – do you think Lady Gaga represents the New Sincerity concept well? She’s outlandish and avant-garde but not really in an ironic way. She does what she does genuinely, like it or not. What do you think?

Luke Muehlhauser May 10, 2011 at 5:40 pm

That’s quite possible.

That link about Christopher Hitchens has been removed.
