I’ve Moved to Berkeley

by Luke Muehlhauser on March 31, 2011 in News

Just to keep ya’ll in the loop…

I’ve just moved from Los Angeles to Berkeley to join the visiting fellows program at the Machine Intelligence Research Institute.

I showed up at about 1am, and yet I stayed up until 4:30am chatting with seven MIRI people (at different times) about artificial intelligence timelines, paths toward Friendly AI, how many lines of code a Seed AI would require, how likely it is that we live in a computer simulation and which kinds, and how decision theory connects up to the metaphysics of existence.

My kind of people. :)

This is very good news – I think the Future needs you!

Luke,

I’d be interested if you had a post were you go into the probabilities concerning whether we are living in a computer simulation now. Have you written on this, or plan to do so? It seems like a very difficult question to ponder and I am not really sure how one would go about it. I’d love to engage the question myself, but it is wholly outside of my area of expertise (if I have one at all).

Oh, and I am wicked jealous… I’d love to live in CA (love L.A., never been to Berkeley — sure it’s nice). As a fan of your blog, I’d like to congratulate you on the visiting fellowship. Though I may often disagree with your positions, you have forced me to re-evaluate my own presuppositions. I hope you are able to do that for MIRI.

Best,

“Rufus”

Thanks for bringing that LA sunshine with you… we’ve been on a serious rain streak up here lately. What a beautiful weekend this is shaping up to be.

Hi Luke,

If you manage to come to the Mountain View LW meet-ups, please introduce yourself — I would love to talk to you!

It’s a figure of speech, MarkD. Sheesh.

Congrats. Just remember that if this is all a computer simulation, Berkeley is not real.

Luke,

Shoot me an e-mail so we can get lunch some time! I assume that you can see my e-mail through some kind of administrative magic.

I’m happy for you Luke. You’re doing what you like and that’s what matters. I wish you the best and I hope you’ll be sharing the wonderful things you found out about.

I went to UC Berkeley, but it’s been a few years. Do they have an office there, and where, if so?

In the spirit of the day, have you considered seeking a joint appointment with The Esalen Institute? There are some fruitful potential pathways for exploration in merging Futurism, AI, andthe Noetic Sciences. Because at least noetic is poetic.
