Gods You Don’t Believe In
Update: You can now get the full list on a handsome wall poster!
Christians are often baffled as to how atheists could deny the existence of their god, Yahweh. But they shouldn’t be. Christians deny thousands of the same gods that theists deny. Atheists just deny one more god than Christians do (or three, maybe).
Some of my favorites? Pratibhanapratisamvit, Buddhist goddess of context analysis. Or Acat, Mayan god of tattoo artists. Or Tsa’qamae, north american god of salmon migration.
Anyway, here’s a handy comparison between the gods Christians deny and the gods atheists deny. We’re not so different, after all. Let us celebrate our vast agreement on the non-existence of thousands of gods!

Maybe we should start saying, “When you understand why you dismiss Pratibhanapratisamvit, you will understand why I dismiss Yahweh.”

Baphomet
Baphomet
christian god
Eh? I thought Baphomet was some kind of pagan god.
(Quote)
Nice list. You forgot . . . Illuvitar.
(Quote)
Re: Baphomet. First mention of him in history comes from his worship by the (Christian) Knights Templar.
(Quote)
Lol, I actually thought about including Eru Ilúvatar.

Christians are often baffled as to how atheists could deny the existence of their god, Yahweh.
I don’t think they’re baffled because Yahweh is a god – but rather because they consider his existence to be obvious. (Just as they’d consider all these other gods to be obviously fake or false).
If I were to get into an discussion with someone who was apolitical, and ask them how they could have absolutely no interest in how the country is being run, their pointing out that I also reject all political philosophies except the one I hold wouldn’t strike me as a a particularly persuasive argument.
Just as the fact that I can’t stand bananas doesn’t count as an argument for starvation.

I’ve always liked John Lennox’s reply to the ‘But you’re an atheist with respect to so and so — I just go one god fewer than you do’ claim: it’s like a celibate person telling a married person, ‘But you’re celibate with respect to every other possible partner — I just go one partner fewer than you do.’
(Quote)
i love this! there was an article in a recent magazine that pointed this out, that hundreds of gods once had worshippers who made fantastic claims about them, and just because a god no longer has any worshippers doesn’t disprove any of those claims. i find saying “gods” irks believers more than saying “god, she”.

It seems to me that there’s a difference between believing in something’s existence and having sex with someone. You can choose whether or not to have sex with someone, but you can’t really choose to believe something or not. You can decide to profess belief or not, but you can’t choose your actual beliefs.
It’s more like choosing to reject all stories about aliens except for one. If the evidence is the same in all UFO sightings and alien abduction stories, then your beliefs regarding all of the stories should be uniform. That is, it would be absurd if John told you he was abducted by green, furry aliens and your mother told you that she was abducted by pink, scaly aliens, it would be ridiculous for you to believe one but not the other. The evidence is the same, so you should believe both or reject both.
If the evidence that Vishnu exists is the same as the evidence that Yahweh exists, you should either believe that both exist or believe that neither do. This argument (hardly an argument–more of a demonstration) shows that there are a lot of gods that people reject for reasons that, if they were consistent, should also lead them to reject their own pet god(s).
(Quote)
This line of argument is nice for scoring rhetorical points, but not so great as an actual argument.
Having spent time in both monotheist and polytheist camps, I can tell you that the conceptual differences are very real and very relevant to this kind of argument. A god that is believed to be part of a pantheon–even the head of the pantheon–is not the same sort of God that Christians and Muslims believe in. For instance, the Christian God is supposed to be omnipotent, but a member of a pantheon is inherently limited, if only by the power of the other gods.
Invoking Allah, Ahura Mazda, Aten, or the Highest God of Syria of late antiquity is far more logically relevant. But in that case, Christians have the opportunity to merely say that those others are misinformed about God; Christians (at least, informed ones) don’t actually disbelieve in Allah, but only believe different things about him. Denying the existence of members of pantheons is quite different from denying the existence of God.

Choosing partners is irrational and does not commit one to believing that the person they’ve picked is objectively superior to anyone else’s partner. The question is whether choosing a religion is a more rational process than picking a partner. Do people consciously choose a religion to follow after they’ve studied all religions and settled on the best? Most people seem to be brainwashed into their parents’ religion since childhood.
I think people just find themselves holding some beliefs. When they realise that their beliefs clash with other people’s beliefs they try to defend their own religion against other religions. But the exercise is futile unless there are agreed criteria for choosing one religion over another like there are in choosing one scientific theory over another.

“It seems to me that there’s a difference between believing in something’s existence and having sex with someone…It’s more like choosing to reject all stories about aliens except for one. ”
Lorkas, I agree, but I think that this misses Lennox’s point. It seems to me that he’s refuting the purely rhetorical strategy of categorizing theists as ‘almost’ atheists. In other words, he’s saying it makes as much sense to refer to a monotheist as an atheist with respect to other gods as it does to refer to a person in a monogamous relationship as celibate with respect to other people: a monotheist is in no meaningful sense an atheist, and a person in a monogamous relationship is in no meaningful sense celibate (no marriage jokes!).
(Quote)
In that case, Lennox’s objection is irrelevant to the real point raised here. The point of the illustration is not “monotheists are almost atheists”, but “we should be consistent in our application of reason to truth claims”. If someone believes in Yahweh but not in Vishnu, they need cohesive (and, I would say, evidence-based) reasons for rejecting one and accepting the other, just as someone would need an evidence-based reason to accept some alien stories and reject others. The illustration says, “Look: we both reject [god A] because there’s no evidence for his existence, we both reject [god B] because ….”, and it raises the question of why believers in a particular god believe in the absence of evidence. If you say “faith” then you might as well have faith in any of the gods mentioned. It just points out an inconsistency.
Lennox doesn’t address this at all by comparing belief in gods to choices in sexual relationships.
(Quote)
“In that case, Lennox’s objection is irrelevant to the real point raised *here*. The point of the illustration is not “monotheists are almost atheists”, but “we should be consistent in our application of reason to truth claims”.
Lorkas, while you can of course run the ‘many gods’ argument in that way, it’s not the only way it’s run, and, more importantly, it’s not the way it’s being run *here* (by which I mean in this post). This post seems to be running it in accord with the rhetorical strategy I referred to in my last post. Lukeprog says:
“Anyway, here’s a handy comparison between the gods Christians deny and the gods atheists deny. *We’re not so different, after all*. Let us celebrate our *vast agreement* on the non-existence of thousands of gods!”
(Quote)
Point conceded
It seems I was conflating my understanding of the point with the point that actually seems to have been made by lukeprog.

A nice start, but…
While most Christians refer to their god ad “God,” He is supposedly the “Yahweh” of the old testament. But keep in mid that He sometimes uses other names, such as “Jealous,” (Exod. 24;14)
You also list “Elohim” as gods denied by Christians. I don’t think this is the case. I would guess a sizable percentage of Christians are completely unaware of the Yahweh/Elohim issue in Genesis, and the rest make up various excuses as to why this is not an issue.
Also, you do not list “the Trinity”, the mysterious (or nonsensical) three persons in one God that most Christians claim to believe in, although the Biblical basis for this is extremely slim.
(Quote)
Let’s put that to the “Susan test.”
I know someone named Susan. What, you do too? Could it be the same person?
Does she liv e in St. Louis?
Does she drive a red Miata?
Is she an architect?
No, no, and no? Well, no big deal, we may have different ideas about the details of Susan, but I’m sure it must be the same person.
(Quote)
To complete the analogy, though we have differing beliefs about those details, we agree that the Susan we’re talking about is the first wife of Bob (about whom we are in substantial agreement), wears a brace on her left leg because of a collision with an SUV, and owns a pug.
Similarly, though Christians and Muslims believe different things about Allah (which, for those who are unaware, is just Arabic for “the God,” and is used by Arab Christians), they believe he created the universe the universe, formed a first man named Adam out of earth, and was the God of both Abraham and Jesus.
(Quote)
I like the list, but wonder at the omission of “Jesus” and “Jehovah”. Is this because noms de guerre aren’t used here?
(Quote)
Jehovah is a transliteration of Yahweh, who appears on this list. Jesus is considered by most Christians to be identical, in some way, with Yahweh (”the father”).
(Quote)
This list in not complete at all. For one thing the majority of modern day christians refuse or do not acknowledge any god by the name of YAhweh. But rather worship Jesus Christ, who is the son of a no-named god simply called by a title “god” but also is the same exact being in some redneck, twisted sort of way. They do not know him by a name, nor do they acknowledge any names. They have used Jehovah but this is a mis translation of Yahweh, and even that name as a god is really seperate according to the ones that follow the god by that name. So you need to add jesus christ to the list. Ther are many modern day christians coming out of the cookie cutter christian churches who only know their god by the name of jesus christ, and no other. They say he is his own father and spiritual guide too, but all the same being.
(Quote)
The list is comprehensive but lacks Finnish mythology gods (from Kalevala)
Ukko – The supreme god (God of gods, lighning etc.)
Ilmatar – Creator of world, Mother of Väinämöinen
Ahti – God of the seas. And a king of the rulers of the sea.
Tapio – The god of forrests.
Väinämöinen – A semi-god. Born the day world was created.
I really don’t get the kind of believe systems that dismisses so much wonderful tales, just because they think its heresy.
(Quote)
Koala and trspcok,
Thanks, I will add those gods to the list.
(Quote)
You missed Bono.
(Quote)
Koala,
Actually, Ukko and Tapio were already there. But thanks!

Publicly I believe in all of them; privately I believe in none of them.

Hi,
I love this list.
I would love having it as a coulorfull poster on my wall, or as a t-shirt with all those names on the back.
I think the list would be improved if you put the three last names further up in the list, in alphabetic order, together with all the rest.
And add the different christian names more than ones, I mean put Jahve under J, Yahwe under Y, Jesus (Christ) under J, and the Holy Spirit under H. Why I think so, I don´t think thouse fairytail figures need any special treatment. I think they should be treated the same way as the other mythical figures. Maybe after Jahve with J you could write “see Yahwe” in the boxes under “Gods atheists don´t belive in” and “Gods Christians belive in”.
Thanks for your list.

Marie,

I believe I can make both the poster and the t-shirts, if you want. I would just like the author of the post to email me his permission to do so. After all, the creative commons link says not for commercial use. It is more economical if I could make more of these, but then I’d like to sell them as fundraiser for my local freethinker’s group on campus.

I hereby declare that anyone who so desires has permission to modify and reproduce this list of gods for commercial or non-commercial purposes.
It’s just a list, and represents virtually no original work on my part. All I did was type up a compilation of a bunch of other lists. Have at it!
I might make that poster myself.

You forgot Týr, the Nordic god of single-combat.

I would list Elohim as different than Yahweh. Elohim was the creator god. Yahweh was more of a “tribal war god.”
In Genesis 1:1, it says God’s name is Elohim. In fact God is referred to as Elohim over 2,500 times in the Old Testament. Well, he’s also referred to as El (about 250 times), El-Shaddai, El-Elyon, and others. I guess it’s safe to assume we’re talking about the same God. Correct?
What is Elohim like? He seems quite personable. He walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the day. He chatted with Cain and Abel and came looking for Abel after he was killed by Cain. Enoch walked with him for 300 years. He gave Noah detailed instructions on building an Ark that would house millions of species . He came into Abraham’s tent for a visit and had a meal with him. He negotiated with Abraham before wiping out Sodom and Gomorrah with fire and brimstone. He wrestled with Abraham’s grandson all night. (Isn’t it impressive for a mere man to wrestle God for an entire night?) Overall, Elohim sounds like a very personal God. His only really off-character act was killing millions of people and animals in the great flood.
However, in the O.T. God then goes through a radical transformation. He changes from this personal God to burning bushes, thunder and lightning from Mt. Sinai, you can’t see his face and live, and you can’t even touch the mountain where he is and live. Are we talking about the same God who was just hanging out with Abraham and company? Why did he all of a sudden become this impersonal, untouchable God? Oh, and now he’s changed his name to Yahweh. Or Jehovah. Or a bunch of Jehovah-somethings. Are we still talking about Elohim? It sure doesn’t sound like it.
A good summary of Yahweh’s character can be found in Richard Dawkins’ description of him:
Of course, when Jesus describes God in the N.T. it’s nothing like Yahweh. It actually sounds a bit more like Elohim.
Bottom line, it’s really hard to define who the “Christian God” is. Really, you have to list Elohim, all the El-?, Yahweh, and all the Jehovah-?, Jesus, “The loving Father in heaven”, Holy spirit, and even the Bible (God=Jesus=Word=Bible).

What about Garl Glittergold? You could go the extra mile and include the entire D&D pantheon, but he has the coolest name

I like the poster, but the argument isn’t just weak; it’s invalid. Just because all those other gods are false does nothing to address the truth value of the statement “Yahweh exists.” I’m not sure whether the fallacy committed here is a red herring fallacy or not. To me, the structure of the argument seems to follow:
(p1) Since some people worship Yahweh
(p2) and since all other gods throughout history are no longer worshipped
(p3 implied) (and they are no longer worshipped because they are false)
————————————————
Therefore, it is highly probable that Yahweh is also false.
I have recently deconverted from Christianity, so I am very interested in making sure my arguments are sound and cogent. I have to admit, though, that I’m also very new to the whole logic thing.
I would love to receive some feedback on my observation.

BJ,
Such an argument is invalid, and I never made it.

OK, so “YAY to me” for correctly identifying an invalid argument. But “boo to me” for incorrectly attributing the argument to what I thought your poster was getting at. So can you help me correctly identify the argument being made by the poster?
I guess I saw the poster and jumped to “Look at all these gods nobody believes in. So why should I believe in your god?” And that’s where I saw the invalid argument.

BJ,
The poster doesn’t assert any argument at all. It merely intends to point out that disbelieving in gods is not so unusual a thing.

Elohim actually has another meaning entirely separated from Yahweh. The Elohim (plural) are the creators central to the new mythology of Raelianism.

Hey its possible for Christians to be agnostic to all other gods technically. Aside from that, the point is obvious but I would just work on the assumption that some of those gods are essentially the same gods just different facets with different names cause otherwise thats a lot of gods.

It’s not a logical argument, it’s a rhetorical one. A rhetorical reductio-ad-absurbum. The point you seem to be missing about it is that it is not saying because these are false, so is Yehweh or whatever. It’s saying that there’s no more reason to believe in Yehweh than in these others so if I, as an atheist, am going to believe in “God” I could just as easily pick any on this long list.

This argument seems powerful for the atheist, but really I’m not sure it says so much. When an atheist asks me why I don’t believe in Vyasa, I simply say, is it omnipresent? Omniscient? And so forth until I’ve covered what I believe God to be. If the atheist says “no” to one of my necessary qualities in God, I simply say that’s why I don’t believe in Vyasa or some other deity. If the atheist says yes to all of my questions, I say that I just call my deity God, where as the atheist calls it Vyasa or something else.
So I don’t think this is a good philosophical argument, but it’s an excellent religious one.
