From Jesus to Christ

From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians is a 4-hour PBS documentary about the latest research on the origins of Christianity. Watch it online or buy the dvd.

I thought it was excellent, though I was disappointed that PBS did not interview any conservative scholars (the ones who take the magical stories of the New Testament as historical fact). Theirs is a view that should be represented, because it is a major part of contemporary research.

Although it may sound snobby, the “conservatives” are not taken that seriously in history. They are essentially the history equivolent of Intelligent Design advocates in biology.

maybe it is just me, but in the study of Religion I was taught to approach every religion with appreciation, but as a secular phenomen, leaving your own beliefs at the door (it should be noted that my teachers are religious, this is just not in the domain of the subject).  As soon as you start bringing your belief of magic and maricle, you are no longer doing history. You are doing theology.

I watched this documentary some time ago, and I agree – it is absolutely excellent. I’d also recommend another one of their documentaries called The Bible’s Buried Secrets. It deals more with the Old Testament and the birth of Judaism, so it nicely complements From Jesus to Christ.

By experience, I can say that conservatives are only conservative when they talk publicly. Otherwise they are surprisingly open minded.

i know. I was not even trying to insult them, I was just trying to say when you assume magic as part of history, you are doing theology.
