Atheist Stand-Up Comedy in Church

by Luke Muehlhauser on July 4, 2009 in Christian Theology,General Atheism,Video

Magnus Betner is a Swedish comedian who did the following atheist stand-up routine in a church. Ballsy. And hilarious:

Magnus also has his own Youtube channel, which has all his videos in English.

I was always under the impression that he was (at least) a deist, but after reviewing this little performance I guess he isn’t. I think he was a couple of years back though. He probably changed his mind recently. Anyway, good fun :)

Correction: The swedish wikipedia entry claims he describes himself as an atheist. I guess you learn something new everyday.
Swe – “Betnér har beskrivit sig själv som liberal, feminist och ateist”
Eng  – “Betnér has described himself as a liberal, a feminist and an atheist”

Awesome. I’m going to check out his YouTube video’s, thanks!

Terrific, I’ll have to try that some time.
What, you have to wait for an invitation?

Invitation for what?

Reginald Selkirk July 5, 2009 at 7:14 am

I presume someone involved with the church invited him to come and perform.

Ballsy? I don’t know. Being an atheist in Sweden is about as ballsy as sporting an Obama t-shirt in San Francisco. Even in a church, not so ballsy. I bet half of those people in that church are atheists who are just there for the music. Christianity in Sweden has been on life-support for quite a while.

At least the pastor seems to genuinely believe, unless he’s about to ‘pull a Meslier’. :)

I think the pastor is an idiot.  I would have interrupted him and showed him the door right away – not just because he was profaning God in my church, but because his doctrine is sloppy atheist idiocy.  And I probably would have agreed with him that sometimes it’s ok to use profanity, and I’d use some while taking him to the door. Atheists have no problem being disrespectful and arrogant, as this shows.
Ballsy, yes.  Admirable?  Only if you are a skeptic.  Assholeish?  Self-righteous?  Erroneous?  Definitely.
